The challenge

As Hurricane Ian strengthened in September 2022, a global financial institution needed to access real-time insight on the potential impacts to its property, people and assets in North America. With hundreds of locations at risk, the organization, its business leaders and risk managers needed to track the exposure of its assets and coordinate effective mitigation efforts.

The stakes were high, as the storm's intensity and unpredictable path threatened substantial financial and operational losses.

The solution using data and analytics

The organization overcame these challenges by accessing real-time insights and actionable data from Global Peril Diagnostic (GPD) enabling it to:

  1. Focus mitigation efforts on the most vulnerable locations. The financial institution isolated 170 at-risk assets, valued at $1.9 billion, leading them to reinforce assets and move stock at 19 critical locations
  2. Proactively plan and coordinate mitigation efforts. Real-time alerts and tracking, with interactive mapping, provided continuous updates on wind speeds, storm surge risk and shifting exposures, as the number of at-risk assets rose to 606, with a total value of $17 billion, over three days
  3. Adapt and update the hurricane response. As the storm progressed the organization undertook mitigation efforts at four additional sites in light of GPD alerts on threats from heavy rainfall, tornadoes and high winds.

The impact

By using GPD, the organization safeguarded its assets at a critical time, significantly reducing potential losses and overall impact of the storm on assets and operations.

After the event, the organization used the platform to assess the damage and define the next steps to improving future resilience. The business leads were able to prioritize exposed assets and, with the data from GPD, enhance follow-up actions with well informed decision support. This efficiency ensured a faster recovery and more rapid return to normal operations.

We’re now helping the organization get a better understanding of how to optimize its current risk and insurance approach.

We continue to support the organization's understanding of impact zones and the affect the hurricane season imposes on its operations, people and assets.
