A U.S.-based global payments company needed an insurance program that could keep pace with its growth and evolving risk profile. WTW redesigned the company’s cyber, crime and technology errors and omissions (E&O) program, while also restructuring their D&O placement, adding more than 25 coverage enhancements, generating annual premium savings, and much more. The result was a more coordinated insurance program designed specifically for the realities of a modern fintech business.

Results at a glance

  • 200% increase in crime insurance limits
  • Increased cyber, E&O and D&O insurance capacity
  • More than 25 coverage enhancements
  • Annual premium savings
  • Financial institution-grade E&O protection
  • Greater clarity for claims spanning cyber and crime coverage

The challenge: Insurance coverage needed to keep pace with rapid growth

The client, a U.S.-based fintech unicorn and global payments company, had grown beyond the capabilities of its existing insurance structure.

Separate cyber, crime and technology E&O policies created uncertainty when incidents potentially triggered more than one coverage.

The company faced several challenges:

  • Existing limits no longer reflected their scale, transaction volume or expanding exposures.
  • Separate policies contained different triggers, definitions and exclusions.
  • Losses involving both cyber and crime risks could create uncertainty about which policy should respond.
  • The program lacked broad financial institutions E&O coverage.
  • Leadership wanted fintech-specific protection while maintaining cost discipline.

The solution: A coordinated insurance program designed for fintech risks

WTW worked with the client to redesign its insurance architecture around solutions specifically developed for fintech companies.

The cyber, crime and E&O program was rebuilt using the proprietary FinTech Plus form, creating greater consistency across coverage grants, definitions and policy triggers. More than 25 coverage enhancements were incorporated into the program, helping address the unique operational, regulatory and transaction-related exposures faced by modern payments companies.

The redesigned structure also enabled the company to significantly increase available insurance capacity while improving the breadth of coverage and strengthening the overall claims framework.

Perhaps most importantly, the placement provided access to broader financial institutions-style E&O coverage that has traditionally been difficult for payments-focused organizations to secure.

D&O coverage remained separate by design

While insurers were comfortable incorporating D&O coverage within the broader program structure, the client elected to maintain a dedicated D&O tower.

WTW placed the D&O program on a specialized manuscript policy. The solution delivered increased D&O limits and broader protection in several key areas while preserving a standalone structure aligned with the client's governance, capital management and risk financing objectives. The D&O also blended Employment Practices Liability and Fiduciary Liability for a greatly enhanced program.

Rather than forcing all coverages into a single placement, WTW paired a coordinated global fintech insurance strategy with a purpose-built D&O solution designed for high-growth financial technology companies.

Why coordinated coverage matters for fintech companies

Many fintechs and payments companies continue to purchase insurance through structures that were not originally designed for how modern financial institutions operate.

As organizations grow, differences in policy language, exclusions, definitions and coverage triggers can create uncertainty when an event spans multiple coverage lines. Cyber-enabled fraud, social engineering losses and technology failures are just a few examples where multiple policies may be implicated.

By coordinating coverage across cyber, crime and E&O while leveraging financial institution-grade policy forms, fintech companies can often secure broader protection, improve claims certainty and increase available insurance capacity without proportionately increasing cost.

This engagement demonstrates that sophisticated fintech insurance design is not simply about buying more limit. It is about securing the right coverage structure, the right policy language and the right claims outcome before a loss occurs.
