We surveyed the 15 largest UK Professional Trustee firms covering nearly 2,500 professional trustee appointments

The 2024 Professional Trustee Survey aims to understand the growing presence of professional trustees on Trustee Boards of UK pension schemes and the changing landscape of the professional trustee market.

Over the last decade, we have seen a substantial growth in the presence of Professional Trustees (PTs) on Trustee Boards of UK pension schemes. This growth in professional trustee appointments has been accelerating, especially in recent years.

We also observe significant growth in the use of Professional Corporate Sole Trustee (“Sole Trustee”), where a team made up of at least two accredited professional trustees from a PT firm takes the place of a traditional trustee board to manage the scheme.

To understand these issues better, we surveyed 15 PT firms, including all the largest firms, covering around 95% of the market for professional trustee services. We examined topics including:

  • Growth and changes in the market
