How can organisations be more inclusive for employees with disabilities?

EXpresso Moments with WTW – Session 3

August 23, 2024

This EXpresso Moment focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), specifically how employers can create a more inclusive working environment for people with disabilities.

This EXpresso Moments webinar was on diversity equity and inclusion (DEI) – specifically looking at inclusivity for employees with a disability. Our speakers shared insights on just how many people and employees in Australia have a disability and how this can impact their working life. They also provided guidance on how to plan and establish a more inclusive and supportive environment for people with disabilities.

Our live audience of leading employers and HR professionals also gave us a snapshot of what their organisation is focusing on to improve inclusion for employees with disabilities.

Key highlights

  • One in six Australians are estimated to have a disability, approximately 4 million people, and about half of those are of working age. However, only 48% of working-age people with a disability are employed.
  • Disability can be defined in two ways:
    • The Medical model looks at disability as an impairment or condition that impacts a person's daily life
    • The Social model views disability as the result of the interaction between people living with impairments and the barriers in their environment
  • 90% of disabilities are non-apparent disabilities, and employees with non-apparent disabilities often choose not to disclose their condition at work for fear of stigma and discrimination.
  • Organisations that have Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) see higher employee career aspirations and higher confidence levels from their employees.
  • Employers need to take steps to make their workplaces physically safe and accessible, ensure privacy protection, foster a culture of respect, ensure inclusive practices and processes, and have an adjustment process in place.

People with non-apparent disabilities often feel excluded at work and are likely to receive fewer benefits and access to training or advancement.”
