WorkSafe NZ has warned that company directors are still falling short of their legal obligations to keep workers safe. A new study has found that company governance must improve, and more must be done to sanction directors and executives.
WorkSafe Chief Executive Officer Phil Parkes was quoted after the study’s release saying he was “deeply concerned that there are directors out there that don't understand their job”. He has put businesses on notice that they must be following best practice guidance – or be held to account for not meeting their responsibilities. This warning comes seven years after due diligence obligations were released in the wake of the Pike River mine disaster.
WorkSafe NZ has given clear indications that it expects directors to do better. It is time for all organisations to look for opportunities to protect their reputation and financial performance from the impact of fines, damages, and increased insurance costs.
