Insurance Marketplace Realities 2026 Spring Update

May 7, 2026

Welcome back to our Insurance Marketplace Realities Report. As we reflect on the past year and the first quarter of 2026, it’s clear that the market remains a buyers’ market in many lines of businesses for risks with favorable loss history, risk mitigation plans, redundancies and quality data. There are notable exceptions — auto liability, unsupported umbrella, excess liability and a handful of particularly challenging industries that continue to present unique hurdles. We're also seeing challenges in pricing, coverage restrictions, and/or available aggregates in lines of business such as Political Violence, Terrorism and Marine for risks with exposure in the Middle East.

We continue to face challenges which affect the risk landscape and the industry as a whole. Key factors continue to be tariff uncertainty, climate volatility, third-party litigation funding, AI and digital dependency, geopolitical instability and changing alliances. We address the potential effects on the market in many lines of business within this report.

The North American market environment does open up opportunities. There is potential to redeploy cost savings in core lines of business such as Property and Financial Lines toward increased policy limits, enhanced retention protection and creative alternative structures that can address the evolving risk landscape. This is especially relevant for emerging and evolving risks, which are demanding more innovative solutions.

As you’ll notice throughout this edition, technology is at the heart of the transformation we’re experiencing. The rapid pace of technological advancement isn't only enhancing our business operations but also driving unprecedented efficiencies. With our specialized edge and perspective as tomorrow’s broker, we believe the future is happening now and it's essential to embrace AI-enabled technologies that enhance our service delivery to both clients and colleagues. Technology has enabled us to enhance facilities such as Gemini, our global, multi-line follow facility and our Aquarius strategy, which is delivering digital insurance solutions to small to mid-size businesses.

This year, we’re particularly excited to spotlight both Willis and Newfront within this report in an interview with Lou Smith, Head of Digital Products and Services at Willis (a WTW business) and Spike Lipkin, Co-founder of Newfront and Chief AI Officer at WTW. And no insurance publication would be complete without a feature on digital infrastructure. We are pleased to highlight Tom Grandmaison and his article on navigating the digital infrastructure and data center revolution.

While the format of this edition remains consistent — offering an overview and thoughtful reflections from our line of business leaders and industry experts — you’ll also find that we’ve placed an even greater emphasis on specialization, adaptability and efficiency.

The industry is experiencing a pace of change that, not too long ago, would have seemed unimaginable. With this rapid evolution come both opportunities and uncertainties. We encourage our colleagues, carrier partners and service providers to keep thinking outside the box and to push the boundaries when crafting specialized solutions for our clients. We also encourage a proactive approach to risk differentiation. To navigate a landscape that shifts without warning, your competitive edge depends on harnessing data, analytics, and technology — not just to keep pace, but to stay ahead. We believe that this edition of Insurance Marketplace Realities can help you plan your journey.

We hope you find this report insightful and that it helps illuminate the way toward a clearer, more confident future.
