Trends and Directions in Canadian Health Care and Disability

After 2 years of unusual trends due to the pandemic, cost trends are back within the pre-pandemic range.

Average per capita costs increased for all categories in 2022.

  • Drugs: +4.3% up from 3.4%
  • Other health care: +3.6% down from 15.7%
  • Dental: +1.6% down from 25.9%
  • LTD: +8.8% down from 9.6%
  • Overall health (Drugs and other health care): +4.0% down from 7.9%

The average 2022 per capita cost for each category varies significantly between organizations*

  • Drugs: $1,147
  • Other health care**: $724
  • Dental: $1,060
  • LTD: $1,233
  • Overall health (Drugs and other health care): $1,871

* 2022 average per capita costs.

** Although lower than the other categories, the per capita cost for other health care continues to increase.
