What Problems Does AI Solve in Actuarial Modelling?
RiskAgility Financial Modeller[1] (“RiskAgility FM”) is WTW’s flagship platform for life and health insurers, designed to handle the complexity of modern actuarial modelling and regulatory compliance. With the integration of Artificial Intelligence, RiskAgility FM is redefining how insurers build, maintain, and optimise models.
Generative AI (“GenAI”) and large language models now power features that make our users more efficient across the board. Whether designing and building models, updating and refining definitions, explaining and documenting models, or importing new spreadsheets from the product pricing teams, our AI tooling saves you time and makes you more effective.
Generative AI: Productivity Gains for Modellers
GenAI[2] is the perfect assistant to your current teams; helping them to learn and guiding them to be more efficient in their work.
An actuary uploads their model to Model Documenter, which generates summary and detailed descriptions of its capabilities in minutes. A month-long documentation project is now as quick as the time taken to review the output.
RiskAgility FM’s AI Assistant enables natural local language interaction, guiding users through feature planning, writing formulae, refining and explaining model code, dramatically reducing development time and errors. We see aggregate savings of 30% via improved efficiency often cited.
Users can leverage AI-driven power tools to accelerate migrations, import spreadsheets, reconcile models, and simplify time-consuming processes. Savings are around 75% on such activities. These capabilities not only improve productivity but also reduce costs and shorten project timelines, addressing one of the biggest remaining challenges in actuarial modelling.
Agentic AI: Autonomous Modelling with Human Oversight
If Generative AI accelerates tasks, Agentic AI[3] begins to perform them for you.
As part of a modelling project, an actuary identifies changes that need making in many places across the model. AI Companion (beta) quickly trawls the model, reviews how each formula is written, and makes all the required updates in appropriate ways.
Here the Agentic AI can communicate with applications and can remember between tasks. This elevates it to be one of your team, a junior member who can tirelessly undertake the basic tasks, ready for you to review.
WTW is investing heavily in next-generation AI features for RiskAgility FM. The AI Companion is an advanced agentic tool capable of building, running, and reconciling models from simple prompts in as little as 30 minutes. Combined with the model governance of RiskAgility FM Team, these updates can be reviewed, tested and signed off.
AI in Reporting and Workflow Automation
This is very powerful in model development, but lacks the rigorous robustness needed for reporting, where clearly defined workflows and automation ensure reproducibility. But don’t worry, similar agentic features appear in the roadmap of our Unify[4] automation, integration and governance platform. Here AI allows rapid building of workflows, control and reporting on the processes, and even agents contributing reviews or drafting documents as part of the workflow. Combined with the model governance of RiskAgility FM Team, these updates can be reviewed, tested and signed off.
Why This Matters for IFRS 17, LDTI and Governance
For insurers navigating IFRS 17, LDTI and other regulatory frameworks, these innovations mean faster, more accurate modelling and reporting, with reduced operational overhead, yet still ensuring “human in the loop” review is always possible. By combining cutting-edge AI with WTW’s actuarial expertise, RiskAgility FM empowers organisations to make better decisions, improve efficiency, and unlock new opportunities for growth.
